History

Varelia, a porteneau of the names of the parents she descended from, and a name she had grown up to become quite embarrassed by, grew up in the Atsirian desert, the only daughter of nomads, the youngest of her siblings and of her generation. Her childhood mostly consisted of traveling through the sandsea, and, with the teachings of her parents and elders, she soon learned the ins and outs of the desert, how to navigate using the stars, where the springs were, when the day will be at its hottest, when the rains will come as well as expected from a nomad. She became her parents' favourite, and certainly, the three were very close. The elders praised her quick thinking and adaptability, and despite her being the youngest in her tribe, her siblings and her peers were mostly men, and she became used to having her way.

Traversing through the sandsea meant that Varelia's tribe frequently interacted with other nomadic tribes. As she grew older, she became aware of the men of the other tribes, and that the day where she will come of age was close. Suddenly, she noticed how her mother would subtly direct her towards certain men, and away from others. It was natural, she supposed, they knew what was best for her, and she would need her parents' permission to marry her chosen partner.

Varelia's tribe also came across merchant caravans, and one merchant caravan in particular. This one caravan had been traversing their route for generations, and thus, her tribe knew them well, and they often traded. During these meetings, she often came across a young boy of her age, Sindre, a son of the merchant in charge of the caravan. The two would converse, somewhat entertainingly, for he knew limited Atsirian, and she had only learnt snippets of Trade from other merchant caravans her tribe had met, but over the years, they learned from the other, and grew to become good friends, although her parents were wary.

Then they fell in love.

It was going to end badly, she knew. Her parents would never accept Sindre as her chosen mate, even for her happiness, even if all the water in the desert dried. His father would never allow his only son to chose a life other than that of running the caravan, as his grandfather did, and his great-grandfather before that. Yet, by the time she turned eighteen, the age where she would soon choose her partner and marry, she could not stop thinking of him, and longed to be near him when he was away.

Varelia's parents knew. Of course they did. They hoped, for their sake, the tribe's sake and their daughter's that it was a silly infatuation, and she will be back to the old, obedient Varelia once she and the boy were apart. Loyalty and filialty are values deeply rooted in nomadic culture. Surely she, a nomad, a daughter of the desert, would not be so foolish as to run away from the tribe who nurtured and taught her for a stranger.

She ran. With Sindre the merchant boy, her love, and chosen mate. And maybe now she is coming to regret it.

Personality

Varelia, who now goes by the name Var, is a girl of easy laughter and smiles. To one unused to nomads, she comes across as innocent and naive - and perhaps she is, for she knows no other life than that of the sandsea, no other culture than that of her former tribe - yet sagely, for her knowledge of the desert is deep enough to compare to how one knows a dear friend. Once one knows her better, they will see that she is spirited, quick to learn, quick to say her piece and presents herself as strong minded and stubborn, for she was, once upon a time, considered a future leader. She is used to having her way in all matters, but finds it both touching and amusing when her partner does something chivalrous. And yet, while she can be forceful, Var conducts herself with a certain sort of admirable grace, and the elders have always said that young Varelia was an inquisitive girl who dreams "big dreams".

And then, Var is afraid. She is afraid of meeting her tribe again, and her parents, as low as the chances are, and finally know how they have condemned her. Yet, she says nothing of this to her partner, her husband, if she can find someone to witness their vows, for she is afraid that perhaps his love is not as strong as hers, and that he will leave her alone in the desert. Var is ashamed. She has broken her parents' trust, she has kicked sand in the face of all who had nutured her and made her the woman she is now, and she will forever be known as disloyal and unfilial. Var does not know what to do next, or where to go, for the desert is all she has ever known, and settled life would jar her, but she and Sindre cannot travel the sandsea by themselves for the rest of their lives. She does not say a word of any unhappiness she holds, or cry, for this was the lot she chose for herself, and and her parents have taught her that in such a situation, she cannot complain, or be bitter.

Appearance

Varelia has short, lightly coloured hair that is cut above the shoulders, tanned skin from her hours in the sun and a lean frame from hours of activity. Her clothes are light and airy, well suited for desert travel, and she wears two necklaces made of leather, a gift from her parents when she was a child. Her face is fairly expressive and she is usually smiling.

Varelia is a fictional character played by megaera_inc for himitsu_sensou. She is played by Rinslet Walker from Black Cat, who very much not mine.
